This specimen passed a feature-by-feature check against real photographs of adult fish:
- Very large eye, longer than the snout
- Golden stripe along the upper flank from the gill cover to the tail base
- Small dark spot on the rear edge of the gill cover
- Arched front lateral line with small scutes only on the straight rear part
- No detached finlets behind the dorsal or anal fin

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Round scad
Round scad (cigar minnow) is slimmer, with a much smaller eye and a detached finlet behind the dorsal and anal fins.
Not to be confused with: Blue runner
Blue runner is deeper-bodied, with a black blotch on the gill cover.
