- Last dorsal ray drawn out into a long thin thread
- Small dark spot just behind the upper edge of the gill cover
- Rows of small dark spots along the upper side
- Deeply forked tail with dark tips to both lobes
- Deep, compressed body with a curved belly and pointed head

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Scaled sardine
Scaled sardine (pilchard) has no thread on the dorsal fin and no rows of spots along the side.
Not to be confused with: Menhaden
Menhaden have a large round shoulder spot with scattered spots behind it, and no dorsal thread.
