- Compressed oval body, clearly shallower than a permit's
- Blunt, rounded snout with a small, low mouth
- Yellow on the throat, belly, pelvic and anal fins

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Permit
Permit are deeper and rounder, with long sickle-shaped fin lobes, and grow many times larger. Pompano are shallower-bodied, with yellow on the throat and belly.
