How to tell it apart

Not to be confused with: African pompano

African pompano has a steep, squared forehead, hard scutes on the tail wrist and a long, curved pectoral. Permit have a rounded head and no scutes.

Not to be confused with: Florida pompano

Pompano are smaller and shallower-bodied, with yellow on the throat and belly. Permit are deeper and rounder, and grow many times larger.
