How to tell it apart

Not to be confused with: Mutton snapper

Mutton snapper carries a black spot below the rear dorsal and blue lines under the eye. The mangrove has neither.

Not to be confused with: Cubera snapper

Cubera is bulkier, with thicker lips and larger canines. The surest tell is the tooth patch on the roof of the mouth: crescent-shaped in cubera, anchor-shaped in mangrove.
