How to tell it apart

Not to be confused with: Spanish mackerel & cero

Spanish mackerel has gold spots and a black patch at the front of the first dorsal; cero has a bronze stripe and spots. An adult king is unspotted, and its lateral line dips sharply below the second dorsal.
