This specimen passed a feature-by-feature check against real photographs of adult fish:

Black band along the base of the soft dorsal, running over the tail base and down the lower tail lobe
Narrow electric-blue band just below the black dorsal band
Bony scutes only on the straight rear part of the lateral line
Long, sickle-shaped pectoral fin and deeply forked tail
No black spot on the gill cover and no yellow in the fins

Not to be confused with: Blue runner

Blue runner has a black spot on the gill cover and lacks the bar jack's black-and-blue dorsal band.

Not to be confused with: Crevalle jack

Crevalle have a steep, blunt head, black spots on the gill cover and pectoral fin, and yellow fins.
